Reaching the Moon
I recently did an evening devotional for my church, based on the book of Joshua. We have been studying this book as a church and I wanted to share with you some of the key things God has been speaking to me about. Here is the full talk...
Joshua 3 v 5-17
What clearly stood out to me was the process in which God’s people followed, to get to the promised land. And the exciting thing is, it is a process we can follow today, so that we too can see all of God’s promises for us fulfilled.
The people set themselves apart (verse 3)
We should look and act differently to those around us. How many of you know the quote ‘shoot for the moon, if you miss you will end among the stars’? (It was pretty much plastered up on every classroom wall in my secondary school). I used to really like this quote, it is encouraging and makes you feel good but actually, I really want to make it to the moon!
When we rush into decisions without first taking the time to prepare and check out the route, we end up taking the wrong steps and so we get lost among the stars... the stars may not be the worst place to be, they may feel like quite a nice place to settle.
Those of you who know me, know I really like sloths. A fact for you about sloths is that in the wild they sleep on average for 10 hours, but in captivity they sleep for around 15/20 hours. They settle into their surroundings and become lazier. If we let ourselves become comfortable in a situation, we won’t then want to make it to the promised land because where we are seems ‘good enough’. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be a sloth in captivity. I want to keep going because God’s promise for me, for you, is to land on the moon!
Therefore, setting ourselves apart means regularly worshipping God, knowing the way He speaks personally to you. When we become this familiar with Him and His presence, we will then be ready to recognise and trust His voice, when He calls us to move.
The People moved (v.14)
God spoke to the people and called them to take action. To put in some effort.
'In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises'. – 2 peter 1 v 5
We need to say yes and respond when we are called. It is so easy to compare ourselves with other's around us and to think that our role is less important than theirs. But this is so not what God says about you. He says that your role is needed, that He has given you instructions that no one else has, you are vital to His plan.
You are exactly in the position where God wants you. We are all moving forward together and I want you to know that you are included. Maybe you feel like the water is about to flood again with you stuck on the wrong side of the promise. But I can tell you that won’t happen because you have Jesus. Jesus died on the cross for you and when He did this, He stood in the gap for you; His sacrifice means that He is always holding back the waters, so that we don’t have to fear being left behind. We can trust in His victory - that He has made the way for us to have a personal relationship with God.
Woah! So. Cool.
They finally saw the Miracle – v 16.
Not before they moved but after. They trusted God and stepped towards Him and He then provided, and they saw miracles beyond anything they could expect!
Is there something you are praying for and waiting for an answer to? Because I want you to know that God is listening, He hears you and we will see the miracles we are praying for, which align with Jesus’ promises for us.
2 Corinthians 1 says ‘Whatever God has promised gets stamped with the Yes of Jesus. In Him, this is what we preach and pray, the great Amen, God’s Yes and our Yes together, gloriously evident.’
I am so excited to see God moving in mine, and in your lives! And I want us to be ready.
What do you need to do to make yourself ready?
- Set yourself apart by spending more time with Him
- Prayerfully giving the entire process of decisions over to God
- Being honest and vulnerable with those around you, sharing your highs and lows
- Actively participating and worshipping, not just consuming
Get yourself ready now, so when He speaks, you will see the fulfillment of God’s great plans for your life, you will land on the moon.
